at the grocery store...

today at safeway, while hovering over the pre-packaged steaks, a little old lady next to me looked up and said:

"you have a look on your face that i used to carry a long time ago."

a little confused, i asked her in what way she meant her comment. she went on to explain that her husband, who passed away 17 years ago, loved to grill. he would send her to the store to shop (even though he worked there), where she had to choose what type of steak her husband would be grilling later that night. apparently she learned quickly what steaks were best, and proceeded to tell me what i should buy. but not before ensuring i could afford it, because "you buy the best you can afford."

apparently the look on my face (which i never really knew what it was...confusion? pondering? lost in thought?), reminded her of passed days. before we parted to continue our respective grocery shopping, she told me that i jolted her back years to a day she had forgotten.

while some (well, most) of the conversation was confusing, and awkward, it left me with a good feeling.
