leavin' the back door open...

this past thurday tim & i went to see the old 97's play at the fillmore in san francisco.

we decided to drive, even though there is a large hole in the freeway, causing us a detour on the return route. what i really should say here is: i wanted to drive so that we could drive past the huge hole in the freeway; so we did.

once we passed the gaping hole the freeway (have i mentioned that yet?) and got into the city, a long line of cars, who appeared to be oblivious to the rest of the driving world, caused us to miss our exit and we were steered into a part of town we'd never driven around.

normally i could summarize getting lost in the city with tim with one sentence: on the way to the concert, we got lost in the city, and i deafened tim with a verbal onslaught of bitching. but i think it is important to note here is how calm i remained along the entire "scenic route."

normally when tim is driving and we get lost, i'm a wreck. i start clawing at the windows and kicking and biting, begging for him to let me out of the car. this is partly due to the fact that i really, really just want to ask for directions, and partly due to the fact that when tim drives in an urban area, the only thing that comes out of my mouth (besides bitching) is small gasps as we nearly go down one-way streets or run red lights. (both of which occurred that night.)

side note to tim: i love you, dear... :)

but, amazingly (and with a lot of concentrated effort), i remained (mostly) silent and looked up directions on my phone. all i have to say is thank god for technology.

if you've never been to the fillmore in san fracisco, and you're in town while somebody is playing: YOU. MUST. GO. it's a damned cool place. the walls are lined with posters of every band who's ever played there. the artwork on them is sweet. there are blue-lit chandeliers hanging above the dance floor. and they give you free apples when you walk in.

we grabbed some food (too much food actually) and waited for the old 97's to take the stage. this is where i have to say that i want to have rhett miller's babies. and, if i heard correctly over the music, tim says that is okay; that way we could raise a talented musician.

unfortunately i started to feel sick about halfway through the concert. but i was determined to enjoy the music and the show, and i did. they played nearly every song i wanted to hear, and to no surprise put on a great show. i'm not sure if it was better than when i saw them at stubb's in austin, but it definitely was equal to it.

side note to shley: did you get my video text?!?

i probably commit to doing this every time i go to a concert, but i have got to start going to see more shows. i absolutely love live music. is it okay to start a new years resolution 5 months into the year?

I was sick at the Old 97s show in H-town too, and it didn't help that the sound man was incompetent. (Lots of squealing mics and way too much cymbals.) Either way it was a good show.
